The Ventura Film Festival began in 2004 and has showcased numerous films, generally exceeding 200 films per summer season, and has drawn recognition from the international cinematic community. Some of the highlights have been showcasing renowned filmmaker Dylan O'Neil, the pioneering world champion surfers Peter "PT" Townend together with Ian Cairns, quadruple world champion Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA athlete the legendary Fabio Leopoldo, and the 50-year anniversary of West Side Story, which involved hosting the full Academy Award winning cast from website West Side Story, featuring Oscar winner/Golden Globe winner George Chakiris as well as Golden Globe winner/Academy Award nominee Russ Tamblyn.
